Domain Names in Multiple Countries
Why is it necessary to register your brand name in other countries?
|
|
Many companies and small businesses have registered multiple instances of their domain name. I was speaking recently to a website hosting professional and came to find out that his company had registered the .com, .net, .org and .biz top level domains for their brand name. The company had also recently decided to expand into Europe, and had registered the .co.uk domain extension of the brand.
This information - coupled with my own domain name experience from several years ago - got me to thinking. According to Daniel Foster, co-founder of .co.uk domains registrar 34SP.com, ”While it is important to protect your brand and even secure country-specific TLD’s, we see many of our clients who simply register the domains and then point them all at a common .com URL.” So what is really involved in securing your brand name in different countries and TLD’s? The experience I had was one where I was simply searching for domain names related to a new product category for my company. I found (of course) that all the usual top level domains were already registered. Interestingly though, the very same domains in several other top level domains - namely country-specific domains were not yet registered. As I proceeded to register (or in some cases, attempt to register) the domains - I learned a few very important lessons.
Not All Domains are Created Equal - That should really say "Not All Domains are Priced Equally". Although I had a vague sense of some differing domain prices, I incorrectly assumed that the .com extension was among the most expensive. Not true. Here is a short list of domains and some representative prices collated together as gathered recently from two large domain registrars. First on the list are the worldwide extensions, followed by some more popular country code top level domains. Prices are quoted in dollars. Note the wide variation in different prices for the domain extensions.

You can view a complete list of the ccTLD’s (country code top level domains) here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_code_top-level_domain#List_of_ccTLDs. As you can see from the list - it will cost a pretty penny every year to hold every single one of these domains for your brand.
Not All Domains Can be Easily Registered - When it comes to country code top level domains, each country has its own rules regarding who is eligible to register a domain. For example, a .fr domain (France’s country code top level domain) can only be registered if you can provide a French residence for the contact. From AFNIC: ”French presence is required and administrative contact address must be in France.” So even if your brand name is available in France - it may be more challenging than you thought to register it. Similarly with the .ltd.uk domain extension for United Kingdom businesses - one must prove the business exists in the UK in order to secure the domain name. From NOMINET: ”All registrants in .ltd.uk and .plc.uk must be incorporated companies (not partnerships of any type or unincorporated companies) listed on the index of company and corporate names (‘the Names Register’) maintained under section 714 of the Companies Act 1985.”
Additionally, some countries require registration through a specific registrant or organizing body. This means that it is likely that the more countries you wish to register your domain name brand with, the more registrations and paperwork you will have to contend with. When you couple that fact with the various expiration dates that may occur, it presents a true logistical nightmare.
So here is a quick recommendation to protect your brand. Register your brand name in as many countries and TLD’s as you can comfortably afford and keep track of. Don’t go overboard. The process will only end up costing you extra time and money over the long haul. Plus the additional benefits will be eroded by the time and energies required to keep all your registrations current and paid up. Good luck growing your online brand - especially if you are branching out into other countries!
